Empowering Eastern Virginia
Four HDD installations under an interstate highway provided conduits for a 17-pipe bundle.
The Gainesville to Haymarket project was executed to enhance electrical capacity for the eastern Virginia and urban D.C. area. The project involved four horizontal directional drilling (HDD) installations under Interstate Highway 66, east of Washington, D.C. A 48-inch-diameter HDPE casing was installed for each crossing, and a bundle of 17 HDPE conduits was pulled in for electrical and fiber optic cables. To counteract the heat generated by electrical cables, the annular space between the conduits and the casing was filled with specialized thermal grout.
- Four HDD installations at two different sites.
- 48-inch-diamter HDPE casing.
- 17 conduit HDPE bundle pulled in after casing installation.
- Thermal grouting to mitigate heat-induced ampacity reduction.
Using the Direct Pipe method, a 4,900-foot-long, 42-inch-diameter steel pipe was seamlessly installed, creating a crucial link for a natural gas transmission pipeline.
Electrical conduits seamlessly link Coconut Grove substation to the Simpson substation to increase reliability of an existing power grid.
